VW replaced the V-10 engine with a more robust V-6 that churned out 20 more hp. 2016 saw several changes highlighted by the inclusion of an auxiliary multimedia MP3 connector, a rearview camera, a DVD-based navigation system, and a 115-volt power outlet. The V-10 also made its way back later the same year.
2007 brought a few powertrain changes. The automaker boosted the 4.2-liter V8 from 310 to 350 hp and added a new 3.6-liter V6 unit that gave out 276 hp. The model was renamed the "Touareg 2" in 2008 and received a mild makeover that included a revised feature content and updated styling for the model year. 2008 was also the V-10's last year. In 2009, the automaker introduced a V-6 TDI with 221 hp and 407 lb-ft of torque in the V-10's stead and discontinued the V-8. The automaker did away with the "2" in 2010, and, once again, the model was called Volkswagen Touareg.
The first-generation Touareg was an excellent road tripper with a smooth-shifting transmission and a luxuriously quiet cabin. The 2016 Touareg VR6 models feature a 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 280 hp and 266 pound-feet of torque. A standard eight-speed automatic sends power to all the wheels ("4Motion") exclusively. The model dashes from naught to 62 mph in 7.7 seconds - an impressive acceleration for a vehicle of its size.
