When does a Transmission Require Replacement?

The Volkswagen transmission system involves sophisticated internal mechanics that receive wear & tear as the transmission distributes engine power into the drive wheels. Under normal conditions, all transmission will eventually wear out and require replacement. We’ve noticed at Keffer Volkswagen that the average transmission will last approximately 150,000 – 200,000 miles under normal conditions. However, we’ve also replaced blown transmissions with far fewer miles. Premature replacements are usually due to the transmission operating in harsh conditions known to wreak havoc on transmissions compounded by the owner ignoring the symptoms that should have signaled them to get professional service. If a transmission has damages that maintenance cannot repair to restore factory specifications, the transmission will require replacement to secure reliable performance at factory specs.

What are the Warning Signs of a Transmission Going Out?

If you begin to experience any of these common warning signs of a dying transmission, we recommend scheduling an inspection quickly to contain worsening problems and to determine if it needs maintenance or replacement to secure reliable performance according to factory specifications:

• Gears slipping 
• Transmission overheating
• Dashboard warning light
• Leaking fluid
• Discolored, burnt fluid 
• Limp mode – some late-models are equipped with a safety feature that automatically shifts and locks into a lower gear to prevent transmission damage when the system detects a problem.
